Is It Best To Train In The Morning Or Evening?

This is one of those questions that has been on the lips of fitness fanatics for years as they search for ways in which they can enhance their results.

Is it better to rise early and hit the gym or wait until the end of the day to release any pent up energy you failed to expel during the day?

Is there a right time to train?

Do you benefit more from training earlier?

Is it right for someone to jump out of bed with a spring in their step at 6am and head to the gym to smash through a session while everyone else is in bed fast asleep?

Alternatively, is it more beneficial to refresh your body and soul in the evening with a session in the gym with everyone else?

You might have your own views on this and that is why you train when you train.

Others may have their views on it but in reality, the best time to train is the time that works best for you.

You can add the likes of science and opinion into the mixture but more important than any of this are the practicalities of your day and how you can fit the gym into your busy schedule.

What is the time that works best for you and when does exercising give you what you want?

In truth, the key to getting it right is finding that balance of training and eating in harmony so you feel good.

This could be a class at 7am in the morning with a quick coffee beforehand or a weights session at 8pm followed by some indulgent eating afterwards.

However, you might still be unsure of when the best time to train might be, so the following should help.

Sleep

If you choose to train in the morning then you might be pleased to know that studies have found that people who train early are able to wind down faster at night.

Therefore, you will produce more human growth hormone than those who train at night.

If an evening workout is more your thing then research has found that this will increase your body temperature and help you to sleep better.

Hormonal Changes

For the early risers, there is a 33% increase in testosterone levels and that helps to increase muscle gains and energy levels.

The after-work trainers will benefit from normal levels of cortisol, which can be as much as 75% higher in the morning, which is not good news as it eats muscle.

The Results

It is more beneficial for morning risers to carry out cardio because they will burn as much as 20% more fat.

In contrast to this, evening trainers should go for their personal best because anaerobic capacity increases later in the day.

What are the other benefits?

A morning workout will have you up and out of bed attacking the day with more energy, increased testosterone levels, higher metabolism levels and improved sleep.

If you work out in the evening, you will be able to stay in bed longer but you will have maximum strength and use it as a way of dealing with any stress which is always a good thing!
